In March 2016, a team comprising of staff and students from the GSA’s Unit System were invited to take part in the 3rd Istanbul Design Biennale, curated by Professors Mark Wigley (Columbia University) and Beatriz Colomina (Princeton University). ‘Design always presents itself as serving the human,’ stated Colomina and Wigley, ‘but its real ambition is to redesign the human.’ The Biennale, which opened on 22 October 2016 in Istanbul, was themed around the title ‘Are We Human? The Design of the Species: 2 Seconds, 2 Days, 2 Years, 200 Years, 200,000 Years.’ I was asked to design the invitation to the exhibition and had to develop it around the said theme.
I paid a visit to the anatomy department at Stellenbosch University where the kind staff assisted me in photographing actual human skulls. I used the best image to develop a simple and bold invitation look.
