Katrin Coetzer is a South African illustrator based in Cape Town. She’s also an ex-classmate and one of my dearest friends. To design the identity for another designer and a friend was quite the challenge, but something we both felt was achievable.
Katrin’s identity had to support her work which can be described as tactile, dreamlike, illustrative and abstract. She uses mixed-media, from drawing, painting and collage to small paper sculptures. Her subject matter ranges from animals to urban spaces and natural places - both real and imaginary. Her work seems effortless and so should her identity.
The final logo was designed using a delicate font originally designed for cartography. Each letter was carefully tweaked and finally placed in-between tiny dots which form the southern cross. Katrin explained that the southern cross is an important part of her identity as an illustrator and person.
